Dote - An Example of Selective "Diversity"

Many of you requested that I discuss the Dote scandal - segregated housing at Coachella, token representation of POC, lack of size inclusion, and more. It's a long one but I hope y'all enjoy! TIME STAMPS BELOW. #internetanalysis #dote #dotechella

0:00 - intro
0:22 - what is Dote? Dote trips, such as Fiji, Coachella
1:07 - how all the quirky teen vloggers (Emma Chamberlain, Ellie Thumann, Hannah Meloche, Summer McKeen, etc) became the Dote Girls… mostly white, thin, pretty, and popular.
2:35 - a few girls of color get added to the Dote trip groups, but they’re still very white
3:28 - Dotechella 2019 and segregated housing… Itskeisha started the discussion. Why were girls of color put into a living room with beds out of couches, where the (mostly) white girls were in nice rooms with bunk beds, on the other side of the house.
5:51 - many Dote girls (of color) and other channels start to discuss the lack of diversity in Dote and on youtube
7:00 - I’m so proud to see so many young girls discussing these issues and their experiences as people of color… and white people need to chime in too and talk about this. use your white privilege!
8:39 - Eris doesn’t think Dote had bad intentions
9:15 - was the Coachella housing segregation intentional? are there any explanations for putting the girls of color in a separate, lesser living situation? the house felt very cliquey bc a lot of the white girls were already close friends
12:55 - the girls of color were often treated differently. Kianna Naomi said that the photographers did not want to take pictures of her (and the other girls of color). they felt unwelcome and uncomfortable
14:30 - Dote’s instagram clearly favored the white girls, then throws in a photo featuring one of the girls of color… for diversity.
15:30 - Eris felt like she had a generally good experience at Dotechella
16:17 - why didn’t any of these girls speak out sooner?
17:59 - Dote’s lack of diversity… their instagram used to be full of photos of Ellie, Hannah, Summer, etc. Once in a while they’d feature a photo of a girl of color. Dote also lacks size inclusivity, like Brandy Melville. To be a Dote girl, you must be thin, and (mostly) white.
19:13 - Dote’s apology statement from the founder…
19:41- the AUDACITY to start posting “This is what Dote looks like” with never before seen photos of “diversity” … Dote has clearly deleted tons of their (white) photos to make their feed look more diverse.
21:00 - who is the diverse group of Dote girls? Texas trip for smaller influencers, including Red Luna Journal. Dote never posted their photos, until now
23:00 - it’s so gross for Dote to use the Texas trip girls as representative of their diversity. Dote also had a “diverse” trip for girls of color, who went to a NY trip.
24:00 - how have the white Dote Girls responded? are they racist? are they to blame for these situations? nah but they are privileged and have definitely been cliquey
27:50 - advice for Dote… listen to these girls. Stop using girls of color to prove you’re inclusive. Get POC on your team as managers, photographers, hair stylists.

Vereena - Diversity on GEcold (there is none) -
Nina Elise - @DOTE, DO BETTER -
ItsKeisha - where is the DIVERSITY on GEcold? -

Kianna Naomi - what really went down on the fiji trip -
Annie Long - where is the diversity on youtube? -

24:43 by the accounts of the girls who were segregated, the actions taken to make these girls feel left out would have been very clear and obvious. At least to anyone paying an iota of attention.

11:48 Dote definitely had an opportunity to make the sleeping arrangements fair. There were multiple options and ways to arrange a better environment than simple dictating that, "the white girls go here, and the diversity girls can stick together over there."

"White privilage is not adressing the issue of others being judged by their color just because they didn't face the same behavior." That is not always true, not every person is outspoken. There are many people who feel genuinely bad about these things but can't share their feelings because they find i hard to express their feelings because of how they were raised. I'm pretty sure if they address these issues, their close people will be very very upset about making them feel sad because they will start feeling conflicted about their attitude towards others causing to being more conscious about acts making the moments more fake. Sometimes, Ignorance is bliss. - Me, A brown person is saying this.

If you really wanted to diversify the group and get the best videos, you'd mix the girls who are already friends in with the new girls. As a camo counselor, that's our strategy to get kids to make new friends and not just talk to the kids they met last year. Especially with cliquey teen girls, it's ESSENTIAL. Otherwise the new girl will not make friends as easily.

I live in Australia, a very multicultural/coloured lol place. I have heard from white people directly hating on other races and one reason being is that 'these people' always stick to their own people. Such hypocrisy. In all the work settings I have been in, I ALWAYS see white people sitting together in their own lil groups. It's the 'poc' who have a wide variety of friends from different backgrounds. Most white people really need to take a long hard look at themselves. You are NOT better than others. Get over yourself. Having less melanin does not mean shit.

Where's the surprise? Everywhere these days there's basically a very small 1 percent of people being represented in anything like that, extremely narrow types of bodies, looks, skin colors, and ages, with almost no variation. Even beautiful fat models have unrealistic, godly fat distribution. Blond blue eyed teen looking girls get a lot more buzz from people and that's the sort of fucked up society we live in. Here we see token girls being SOMETIMES shown but only black, as if they were actually just looking for token examples and this is proven in the segregated housing. Think about the marketing teams that greenlit this bullshit. :| Even if there was more racial diversity there'd be hundreds of millions of other girls not being actually represented bc there's many people that just don't want to see them having full lives bc they don't look "perfect" enough. No amount of confidence can change that. No amount of saying "well this is beautiful too" matters to marketers when it doesn't get clicks.

This reminds me of the situation of my boarding house back in school. I’ve been in two different boarding houses (one for middle school another for high school) and both were the same. I am speaking for Asians here as that’s what I am. In Middle School, we changed our beds every term based on the alphabetical order except for last term of the year (1/4) where we get to say which dorm we’d like to be in and who with, most girls would group up together so when they were asked, they can say the same thing so they can be put together. I’ve had many friends both people of colour and caucasian and I when I was asked, I mentioned people of both races. There was also this one dorm for 14 girls which I had been put in for 6 terms in a row (hopefully by accident) while everyone else got to move at least once, so I specifically ask both the staff and friends to not put me in that room again so I’d get to experience other rooms too. When the time comes, I was put in the very same room, basically the bed next to my old one, every single Asian girls and more quiet caucasians were also put in this room despite all of our request to be anywhere but here, other caucasian girls were put together in a different room. When we asked the staff about it we got two answers: “we’ve seen that you guys are really close so we’d thought you’d like to be together” and “sorry but we’ve already get the other girls in places so there’s no other way to rearrange this.” But when one of the (caucasian) girl liked to swap places with another caucasian girl in another room, she could. We attempted to do the same thing but were replied with “we can’t swap everyone so there will be no more swapping.” No wonder many Asian girls in the boarding house find it hard to befriend others non-asian girls in the school. There would always be a “Asian class”, “Asian dorm”, “the Asians in the back” Skipped over to senior school, our first term was arranged by alphabetical order so I’d get to mix and luckily enough, I got to be with the girls I’m the closest to in the house, all of them were caucasians but that doesn’t say I’m not friends with other asian girls too. I was supposed to leave the school in the 3rd so I was hoping I could have another great room for my last term in the school. When the next term rolled around, we found that all of the asians in the boarding house were placed in a one wing. All shared rooms were for four people and every other wings were full with 4 girls each room while ours was two rooms of 3 and 2. They could have make 3 rooms of 3 and 1 of 4 but didn’t since that would involve putting a non-Asian girl in this “Asian wing.” The funny thing is that, the other dorms get to be in the same friendship group, some even having the same people, (except for one when my caucasian friends were put in because our group was split) so surely it could not have been random. We found out that every caucasian girls were asked about where they want to be placed and who with before the first term end which did not happen to us. 2 out of 3 of Asian girls in my friendship group including me were leaving the next term while one was staying, when we asked, the staff said they didn’t ask us because we were leaving which didn’t make sense because one of us wasn’t and they knew that. We couldn’t managed to get any explanation out of them that’s better than: “we just thought you guys would get along better.” I loved many of the staff for the things over the years but I can’t help but see that there’s some internal assumptions that could be really harmful to kids of colour in a school with the majority being white. Sorry for a long comment, I need to vent

Growing up, I had the privilege of going to good schools however as a Hispanic & Latina in a predominantly white school, being THE ONLY brown person in an AP class was such a bittersweet experience. So many times I was told by pretty white girls and even teachers that I was so “different” from the other kinds of girls that went there-ie other girls of color who were not in AP classes. Like, what do I even say to that???

  • Ella McCarney

    თვის წინ

@Dev I think one of the other issues is when people of colour and other minorities are included in media they often use harmful stereotypes that really doesn’t help be with racism and body positivity and all that. Also, there is barely any other minorities really represented like Asians or Pacific Islanders, Middle Eastern, latinx .... and religiously either I can’t think of one show with a hijabi lead, or even a hijabi in it to be honest. Another bad thing is that diversity always seems to be really bad in kids shows, which is when you literally need it the most. Also to do with the beauty standards thing, we honestly just need to get rid of them all together. They cater to such a specific kind of person and even most white people don’t fit it.

  • Dev

    თვის წინ

@Ella McCarney Also, I don’t view white men as superior. Who are you hanging out with or who taught you that? You may want to talk with the people that you know, that think that way. That’s wrong...

  • Dev

    თვის წინ

@Ella McCarney Wouldn’t the majority of representation be white, with white beauty standards, happen most often, in a majority white country? This should be understood as reality.

  • Dev

    თვის წინ

    @Ella McCarney I gotcha, maybe I am brash when I shouldn’t be...

  • Dev

    თვის წინ

@Ella McCarney I see what you are saying, but we have black representation as have have more than the per capita amount of black and brown people than the population would assume. Also, where does this end? People of all races should learn to use the word no, rather the the shame and guilt that is laid upon them by social media and society. Many of these minorities want money and power and will use whatever battering ram needed to achieve it. White people do the same. Humans are human. It’s time people grow up, realize that the West is predominantly white, and learn to live with that fact. It’s nothing to be ashamed about, it’s reality. I’m not going to touch crime and the demographics that do the most and to a gross degree..

@Isaac Mulisa it’s not the same thing because it’s not caused by her skin color

I just simply think that if there's a white person you'd be comfy with it's her

@Isaac Mulisa but thats not because she was white. That has nothing to do with her skin color. theres a different.

For the bed thing: I think they first only had planned the rooms for the white girls and than they were like "oh we should add some diversity!"

All the things dote did made me upset, but it is disheartening that the popular white girls on the trip with the largest platforms didn’t speak up about it much. Yeah it’s not all on their shoulders but if I were in that situation I would want to be an ally and do what I can to help end discrimination like this.

Okay, I need to speak up. Any company has it's own right to promote whatever they want, like white thin girls if they like. I was first in a rows to defend equality and since I know myself I speak up to anyone about racism, chauvinism etc, but now I must speak up about this crazy thing when we all expect for all companies, all media, everything to be THE SAME! Why can't be one that promote thin girls, other that promote black, then one that promote only men, one that promote size plus...... I WANTED TO LIVE IN SOCIETY WHERE WE ARE ALL EQUAL, WHERE IS A PLACE FOR ANYONE! NOT MONOPOL, WHERE EVERY CORNER WILL BE EXACTLY THE SAME! I WANT PLACE WHERE EVERYBODY HAVE COURAGE TO STAND OUT AND DO THEIR THING! IF THAT THING IS ONLY WHITE GIRLS FOR THIS COMPANY, THEN LET IT BE! STOP MONOPOL!
