And the cost of the conversion? 3hrs charge...VW’s are a slow lane cruise, even slower in electric.. EV isn’t advanced enough for long range journeys in camper vans, even in the UK. I’ve had one for 26 years, build my own engines that are reliable, do work and are a lot cheaper DIY than via a 3rd party engine builder. When VW’s weren’t jumped on by investors or fashionistas parts and dubs were far more realistically priced.

The Bully, as the Bug, is dead easy to work on, engine gets out in an hour to work on it from all sides, and back in a bit over an hour again after proper work was done, engine is forced aircooled and has no problems whatsoever with everything that recurrently goes wrong in liquid cooled engines, undercarriage is straight parts (integral though) mostly, so repair welding and even building Your own repair paneling does basically need a straightedge, three to four clamps and a stable table only (besides pincers, a way to cut tin, and a couple hammers of course), and the common problem of "recurrent breakdowns" generally is an aftermath of no proper maintenance done for literal _decades_ (while they still ride along well enough after those decades to sell 'em to keen buyers 'as is'!) plus by far not enough knowledge and understanding in repair-shops when it comes to maintaining aircooled Boxer engines. Anyway, Jehu Garcia's way of converting a Bully into Tesla-electric is a cool and budget route to get to an electric Super-Wagon You still can not buy on the market in this size and configuration because carmakers incomprehensibly do not produce anything alike. I'm all in when it comes to modernizations or conversions. I have stark doubts, though, that Your reliability and usability went UP compared to a well restored/maintained Bully, in terms of ease of repair and remote places to reach (plus get back into civilization from there).

There is something so retro futuristic with combining these expensive hi tech components in these scrap yard candidates cars.

I'm about to convert my T4 camper as well. I already converted a '89 Golf 2. My biggest concerns are range and charging time. Whilst the latter is not soo important. Maybe a bunch of solar panels on the roof. I would love to get it to between 300-500km range at charging times of under 6-8h. Maybe there's a DIY CCD charging solution out there somewhere?

Love it! Does there exist any literature/videos on other things you will need such as heater, A/C, defroster? I have a type 3 Vanagon and this is one of the directions I am contemplating. But as a daily driver I will need occasional defrosting, heating and cooling capability here in west Texas.

In Brazil you can buy vw parts at the grocery store. No matter how small a town is, there's someone who can rebuild this engine in 3 days using only hand tools. Definitely not expensive to maintain a wv van here.

The future is electric where all the power from the motor use cancerous asbestos internals that will fly into the atmosphere at mouth level and the batteries are made from materials mined by mass child labour mines in poorer countries. maybe the solution is to stop rich kids flying jollies all around the world because those are the ones who are doing all the damage 🤦‍♂️

Sustainability is awesome and an incredible goal! What people do need to understand, however, is it costs more fossil fuels to make a kilowatt of electricity for this van than it does to run it on gasoline even if it gets 5 MPG. Not that it's not a good goal, we all need to understand it's NOT fossil fuel-free just because it comes from an electric power source.
